Clarke Quay and the Singapore River Near Union Square Residences

The Singapore River flows past the northern edge of the Union Square site, and for residents of Union Square Residences it is the first thing beyond the front door: a promenade, a string of quays and the restaurants that line them.

The River Beside Union Square Residences

Merchant Road separates Union Square from the river. On the far side stands Riverside Point, about 170 metres from the site, and from there the riverside walk runs in both directions. Upstream it leads past the hotels and apartments of Robertson Quay, where the river narrows and the cafes are quieter; downstream it passes Clarke Quay, Read Bridge and Elgin Bridge on the way to Boat Quay and the Asian Civilisations Museum at the river mouth.

The river is lined with a continuous public promenade, so a morning run or an evening walk can follow the water for kilometres without crossing traffic. Bumboats and river cruises stop at the jetties along the way, including the one at Riverside Point.

Clarke Quay and The Central From Union Square Residences

Clarke Quay, about 430 metres from Union Square Residences, is the restored row of nineteenth-century godowns that has become one of the city’s best-known places to eat and go out. The Central, home to Clarke Quay MRT station, is about 390 metres away and adds shops and food courts above the platforms. Across the river, the former Liang Court site is being redeveloped as Canninghill Square.

A Linkway From Union Square Residences to the River

The Union Square plan includes a linkway to Clarke Quay and the Singapore River, and the developer intends to partly pedestrianise Merchant Road and Solomon Street, so the walk from the residential lobby to the water becomes easier and greener. The developer’s brochure describes nature trails running from Fort Canning Park through the river to Pearl’s Hill, and Union Square sits on that line.

Why the River Matters at Union Square Residences

Riverside living in the city centre usually means paying for the view and putting up with the noise. Union Square Residences sits a street back from the quays, so the river is a few minutes away on foot while the tower itself looks out over the water from height. The Sky Pool on level 34 frames Clarke Quay and the river, as the developer’s renderings show. The amenities page describes the facilities and the location page lists every distance.
